- Jaya Samhita was the first “stage” of the Mahabharata, considered to be about ~10000 verses long and written / narrated by #Vyasa.

- Neelakantha also gives some examples about readings which have changed in different editions of the Harivansha and says that “only #Vsaya would now know the real meaning”.
Lecture 2: The Mahakavya of the Mahabharata
- We know that no one was from the Kuru lineage. Dhritarashtra and Pandu were born to #Vyasa through niyoga. So the lineage was Kashiraja's blood and Vyasa’s blood.
Vaishampayana
- The sage Vaishampayana is the traditional narrator of the Mahabharata. He was a pupil of #Veda Vyasa, from whom he learnt the Jaya Samhita. He expanded Jaya to write Bharata#, which he recited to the king Janamajeya at the Sarpasatra.
Abhijnana Shakuntalam
- Abhijnana Shakuntalam translates as “the Recognition of Shakuntala”. It is a play written by #Kalidasa on the story of Shakuntala and Dushyanta. It is significantly different from how #Vyasa depicts the characters in the Mahabharata.

Parashara#
- Parashara is one of a Maharishis and credited as the author of the first Purana - the Vishnu Purana. He raised and taught his son #Veda Vyasa. Vyasa is credited as the author of the 18 Puranas (alongside the Mahabharata).

Matsyagandha#
- Matsyagandha was the daughter of a fisherman. She pleased the sage Parashara with her service, and he fathered a son - #Veda Vyasa with her. Since she was unmarried, Parashara carried his son away with him and promised that Vyasa would return to her when she needed him.
