Jaya Samhita

Jaya Samhita was the first “stage” of the Mahabharata, considered to be about ~10000 verses long and written / narrated by #Vyasa.

Lecture 1: The Making of the Critical Edition
- Meaning: “Having bowed down to Narayan and Nara, and also Goddess Saraswati, one should recite the Jaya# epic.”
- Jaya Samhita#: This is the first version of the Mahabharata and mentioned in the benedictory verse recited at the beginning of the lecture.
Vaishampayana
- The sage Vaishampayana is the traditional narrator of the Mahabharata. He was a pupil of #Veda Vyasa, from whom he learnt the Jaya Samhita#. He expanded Jaya to write Bharata#, which he recited to the king Janamajeya at the Sarpasatra.

Mahabharata#
- The Mahabharata can roughly be said to be composed in three stages: Jaya#, Bharata# and Mahabharata#.
